The series finale of World on Fire airs tonight.

With it being Remembrance Sunday, it’s a particularly fitting night for the acclaimed World War Two drama to wrap up its first series.

But is the first series also its last?

Will there be a second series of World on Fire?

There’s been no official announcement of a second series yet, but it would seem likely that the Beeb would bring it back for more.

The show has proven to be a phenomenal success, with the first episode being watched by over 7 million people.

The show’s writer Peter Bowker has certainly got plans for more.

Speaking with RadioTimes.com, he revealed he has detailed plans for more seasons, each of which will cover a year of the war.

‘I know what happens over six series for the main characters.’

Speaking of these long-term plans, he said: ‘If you pitch a show, people will often ask “What happens in series four, episode three? What happens to this character?” You’ve got to know and not be English about it.’

The show – which is filmed all over the world, including locations in France, Poland and Germany – focuses on the lives of ordinary people during the Second World War.

What will happen in tonight’s final?

The synopsis for tonight’s episode reveals: ‘Now part of the Special Operations Executive, Harry is about to embark on his first mission. He’s stunned when Major Taylor tells him he must leave for Poland on a mission to intercept a resistance group who have been identified and targeted by the Nazis. Meanwhile, in Warsaw Kasia is led to the gallows until a bomb explodes amongst the watching crowds.

‘Lois welcomes a baby daughter into the world, and it falls to Robina to break the news to Harry that he is now a father.

‘Harry then heads to Poland, landing behind enemy lines. Putting his language and military skills to the test, he meets with his Polish liaison. He’s led to a barn the network are using, and is at last reunited with Kasia. Is this his chance to save his wife and bring her home to Manchester?’

Other than that, we do know one thing though – Sean Bean’s character doesn’t die. He made sure of that.

Watch World on Fire tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
