The world’s largest online retail event happens on Monday — bigger than Black Friday or Cyber Monday — but few on this side of the planet have heard of it.

It’s “11/11,” also known as “Singles’ Day” or “Double 11,” a 24-hour shopping frenzy hosted by the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.

More than 200,000 brands are participating, offering deep discounts to a projected 500,000 million shoppers. Last year, an estimated 1 billion packages shipped as a result of “Singles Day” purchases, according to Reuters.

The event is so big, Alibaba launches it with a live-streamed gala that this year, Taylor Swift will headline.

The event kicked off in 2009 with only 27 brands offering discounts.

November 11 originated as a student holiday celebrating being single — sort of a counter-balance to Valentine’s Day.

On the Alibaba platform, the most popular products on Singles’ Day are clothes and daily necessities, such as skin care, health and baby products.

Other Chinese companies offer deals on Singles Day, including Pinduoduo — the country’s third-largest e-commerce platform.
