It’s hard to imagine tennis without Serena Williams and Roger Federer, and yet… Barely a few weeks after the announcement of the American legend’s retirement from the US Open, it is the Swiss who has just announced that ‘he ended his immense career at 41 and after twenty-four years of competition. In a long letter published on his Instagram account, he returns to the reasons for this stop and takes the opportunity to send a magnificent message to his wife, Mirka, whom he met in 2000.
First confirming thatwe would see it at the Laver Cup, a competition outside the circuit that he had planned to play for a long time, notably with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, he then explains that after having played “1500 games“, he knows “his body and its limits“and that he finds it preferable to stop, tennis having been”more generous with him than he could have dreamed“.
But the following lines are much more moving: he indeed evokes his “unbelievable” wife Mirkawho has lived “every minute with“him, by warming him up”before the finals” and in particular by attending “hundreds of matches“, same “eight months pregnant“. I have to say that the forty-year-old knows tennis as well as her husband : originally from Slovakia but naturalized Swiss, she herself pursued a fine career from 1996 to 2002. Two years before her retirement, she had even participated in the Olympic Games, where she had met the man who would become her husband nine years later.
