Seven seasons into his career, Nolan Arenado is already in the conversation as the best defensive third baseman of all time.

On Friday night, Arenado took another step toward cementing that label.

Arenado, 28, won his third straight Platinum Glove Award, which has been given out since 2011 to the best defensive player in each league. Both winners come from the two fields of nine players who earned Gold Glove Awards, of which Arenado won his seventh straight this year.

In 2019, the Rockies’ all-star led all NL third basemen with a 10.3 Ultimate Zone Rating, according to Fangraphs, while also pacing the league in fielding percentage (.980), putouts (111), assists (337), double plays (43) and defensive runs above average (12.5).

Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman took home the Platinum Glove Award in the American League. Chapman, 26, was teammates with Arenado at El Toro High School in Lake Forest, Calif.

The Platinum Glove Award is decided by a combination of fan vote and the Society for American Baseball Research’s “Defensive Index”. Only St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, a four-time winner, has more of the awards than Arenado.
