A mother has denied neglecting her teenage daughter and ultimately causing her death, a court heard.

Robyn Goldie, 13, died at her home on July 26, 2018, after developing a stomach infection, Glasgow’s High Court was told on Tuesday.

Prosecutors allege that mum Sharon Goldie, 44, from Wishaw, Lanarkshire, neglected her young daughter and ‘exposed her to unnecessary suffering or injury to health’.

Allegations against the mother include that Robyn was subjected to ‘unhygienic living conditions’ which caused her to contract fleas.

It is also alleged that Goldie spat at her daughter, failed to provide her with proper food, clothing and heating, as well as allowing her to drink alcohol and smoke cannabis.

Goldie is also accused of locking Robyn in the property and that the mother did not ensure she went to school or had an ‘adequate sleep pattern’.

The mum has denied culpable homicide of her daughter at their home and the charges span between July 12, 2017 and the day of Robyn’s death.

Prosecutors state the mum repeatedly failed or stopped Robyn getting suitable medical help or treatment for her illness.

The schoolgirl is said to have developed peritonitis – an infection of the stomach – caused by a perforated duodenal ulcer.

Prosecutor Ashlie Edwards QC said: ‘She was declared dead at her house when medical services were called.’

The mother appeared in the dock at the High Court at Glasgow and not guilty pleas were entered on her behalf by her defence counsel Marco Guarino.

Goldie – who still lives at the home her daughter died – was bailed in the meantime.

A further preliminary hearing will take place in January. No trial date has been set.
