MEGHAN MARKLE broke down in tears just minutes before she went to Westminster Abbey for her final engagement as a working royal and where she was dramatically snubbed by Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Meghan Markle broke down in tears just moments before she joined Prince Harry at Westminster Abbey for this week’s Commonwealth Service. Meghan and Harry’s appearance at the Abbey hit the headlines after they appeared to be ignored by Prince William and Kate Middleton during their final joint royal engagement. ABC’s royal expert Omid Scobie has now revealed that he was with Meghan Markle during her meeting with students from the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) where she later wept.
This marked her final solo royal engagement at Buckingham Palace, and according to Scobie, she broke down in tears at the end of the event.
He explained: “Meghan stayed behind after the students left. It was a moment for her to say goodbye to some of the staff that had been so loyal to her for the past year for the last time.
“It was emotional. Meghan was really composed throughout the engagement but this was a moment to be vulnerable amongst familiar faces.
“It was tough, she was tearful. There were hugs, to say goodbye.”
Scobie continued: “For Meghan, this being the end would have really hit home. It would be the last time she would stand in the Buckingham Palace as a senior working royal.
“It was clear in her body language, very real, very emotional, very vulnerable. And so she went from that straight to the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey.
“A lot of the family members would have known that they had just finished up their last engagement, and that she was flying straight back to Canada afterwards.
“To not see that warm arm of a family member or some kind of welcome or effort being made really gave us our biggest insight into the dynamics of the Sussexes and the royal family and how that’s been for the final couple years.”
The moment caught by cameras saw the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex awkwardly acknowledge each other at the Commonwealth Service.
According to reports afterwards, Harry was taken aback by William’s cold greeting.
Scobie commented on the frosty reception between the two royal couples: “I’ve got to be honest, I was quite surprised that there wasn’t at least a show of warmth in front of the world.
“It was the Sussexes’ last day in a public capacity as working royals. Obviously they continue until March 31st but they are already back in Canada now.”
Scobie added: “I would have thought the Commonwealth service was a moment to say no matter what has happened in the past few months, we are a family.
“I thought the optics were just weird, and the royal family are a family that understand optics.”
ABC News foreign correspondent Maggie Rulli suggested that this frosty reception could have been “a purposeful message”.
She said: “If there was a day when the royal family knew the eyes were on them, all the news organisations were going to be analysing this moment, their body language, they knew it was happening.
“They had the chance to have the optics of unity. Meghan mouths hello to William and Kate. It appears as if no one gestures back.”
