A group of vigilantes lured a man who thought he was arranging to meet a 14-year-old girl in a park for sex.

Ashley Donaghy, 29, sent explicit messages over social media to two girls he believed to be 12 and 14.

But the accounts were actually being run by two grown women who were part of the One Reason paedophile hunters group.

A judge spared Donaghy jail and has instead told him he needs to undergo rehabilitation.

The defendant, who has ‘learning difficulties’, suggested to the 14-year-old girl that they meet in a park to have sex against a tree.

He was confronted by members of the group on a canal bridge near Morrisons in Failsworth, Manchester.

When he realised he had been rumbled, Donaghy turned and ran off, dropping a bag containing glass bottles which smashed.

The defendant, who ‘can’t get on a bus’ and is ‘unable to handle money’, said he had been drinking WKDs.

His barrister Barry Grennan told Manchester Crown Court this was to ‘pluck up the courage’ to go to the meeting.

The paedophile hunters then went to Donaghy’s home in Newton Heath, and his father answered the door.

When the suspect later returned home, he said he was too frightened to go inside because the group were still there, but he did when police arrived.

Sentencing, Judge Timothy Smith said: ‘I accept that for you the consequences of an immediate prison sentence would be far greater than others.

‘You would be vulnerable in prison, and neither you or members of the public would receive any benefit from such a sentence.

‘It would not allow any proper rehabilitation to take place.’

Charlotte Grangle, prosecuting, said the messages to the ’12-year-old’ quickly became overtly sexual.

The court heard how Donaghy ‘almost immediately’ sent an image of his genitals to the ’14-year-old’ and asked her to send pictures of herself.

Before the proposed meeting, the girl told him she was ‘scared’.

He said ‘if she decided she didn’t want to do it then that was okay as well’.

Donaghy, who followed proceedings with the help of an intermediary, is ‘anxious, agitated and has compulsive behavioural problems’, his barrister said.

He added: ‘We are dealing with an individual who is very much less of an adult than most people at 29-years-old.’

Mr Grennan said his client was ‘socially isolated’, lived a life ‘fraught with difficulties’ and was with ‘very little doubt’ autistic.

He argued Donaghy would be ‘extremely vulnerable to abuse by those around him’ and cited a pre-sentence report which said prison would be ‘unhelpful and unconstructive’.

Judge Smith imposed a two-year community order including a 50 day rehabilitation requirement and an 18 week curfew.

He also imposed a sexual harm prevention order for five years.

Donaghy had been on curfew for 10 months already before his sentencing.

He previously pleaded guilty of one count of attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming, three counts of attempting to incite a child into sexual activity, two counts of attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual act, and two counts of attempting to engage in sexual activity with a child.
