Jurgen Klopp was thrilled with the focus, concentration and intensity of his Liverpool team as they beat Manchester City 3-1 in the Premier League at Anfield.
The Reds went eight points clear at the top of the table with the huge victory over the defending champions, thanks to goals from Fabinho, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.
City struggled defensively but pushed hard to get back into the game after conceding two early goals, creating numerous chances, but having to settle with a consolation from Bernardo Silva.
Klopp was delighted with his team after the contest, recognising that City were dangerous, but that his team’s mental strength got them through.
‘What a game. If you want to win against City you have to do something special and we had to be intense,’ said the German.
‘They were good. Oh they were good and we had to defend with all we had but we scored incredible goals.
‘It was so tough to play, the intensity of the game was so clear. It was all worth it, really great. They pass the ball from outside, Sterling. How good did we defend him until then? Because you saw what happens when we don’t defend him anymore.
‘The boys were completely focused and concentrated. It was so good. It is the only way we can beat City, maybe other teams can do it a different way but this is the only way we can beat them.
‘All the games against City were pretty much like this apart from last season’s home game. That was more controlled. This was not the most beautiful and most controlled but it was very lively, I like that.’
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was pleased with how his team played, despite the result leaving them fourth in the table.
‘We played an incredible performance,’ said the Spaniard. ‘I don’t know how many teams can come to this stadium and play the way we did. They scored with the first shot on target, but we played incredibly well.
”There are three teams that have more chances to win the Premier League than us. We’re in November so let’s see what happens.’
