First Fortnite update of the year adds weapon side-grading

As the first season of Chapter 2 draws to a close, Fortnite adds a new feature that can transform weapons.

We haven’t got much longer until Fortnite Chapter 2’s first season ends, with the next season expected to begin in February. Before we move onto that, though, Epic Games has introduced a new update to the game, and it comes with a nifty feature – weapon side-grading.

What is weapon side-grading? Essentially, it allows you to take one of your weapons to a workbench and transform it into another weapon of the same rarity, for only a tenth of the standard upgrade cost.

At the moment, this feature seems to only be limited to the assault rifle, which can be side-graded into the heavy assault rifle – a classic Fortnite weapon that was removed in a previous patch due to being too powerful. But there is plenty of potential to bring back and/or improve other weapon types.

This could potentially help revitalise the action in Fortnite, as Chapter 2 trimmed the item pool, limiting players to pretty basic weaponry.

Aside from that, the update has added some extra items to the Battle Lab (the flint-knock pistol, the shockwave grenade, and the impulse grenade) and addressed some bugs that have been plaguing players. The full list can be found on Epic Games’ website.

Fortnite is available now on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Switch.
