Tattoo artists called for the age limit for face tattoos to be raised.

Currently, people can get any tattoo from the age of 18.

However, tattoos visible outside of clothes can affect people’s job prospects.

The British Tattoo Artist Federation (BTAF) said facial inkings are called ‘job stoppers’ in the industry because they can put off employers.

Lee Clements of the BTAF told the Telegraph he had seen a ‘huge increase’ in the numbers of people looking for

‘I can’t go a week without a young person coming into our studio asking for a tattoo on their neck, face, or hands.

‘It is concerning for us as professionals because in the future it is going to affect job prospects’.

He said these concerns ‘could carry weight to higher the age people can get facial tattoos’.

Mr Clements, who runs a tattoo studio in Barry, South Wales, said people were more worried about getting ‘the perfect Instagram photo’.

He also raised concerns about unprofessional ‘scratchers’ giving people tattoos.

Children had come to him after having tattoos done by such practitioners, and he said he wants the Welsh Government to bring in stricter laws about who can work as a tattoo artist.

Although tattoos can preclude people from some jobs, there are indications that public opinion is changing to become more accepting.

The Metropolitan Police and West Yorkshire Police have both recently relaxed rules around tattoos.

The Met’s Commissioner Cressida Dick said people recruits could now show visible tattoos for the first time, saying: ‘We hope this will show we are a modern service.

‘A huge number of young people carry tattoos and we want to get the best of London in.’

The Army said now allowed recruits to have tattoos on the hand and the back of the neck – though many chose to keep their saluting hand free from them ‘out of respect’.

However, they said any tattoo visible on a passport photo, such as one on someone’s face, was ‘unacceptable’.
