Colin Thackery has fans in tears once again as he fulfills dream of singing at the Royal Variety Performance

Colin Thackery has left fans in tears once again as he fulfilled his dream of singing at the Royal Variety Performance.

The 89-year-old war veteran won of this year’s Britain’s Got Talent after capturing the hearts of the nation with his courageous stories.

And while dedicating a number of his performances to his late wife, the hero sure did Britain proud during his rendition of I Vow To Thee, My Country.

As he blasted out the tune in front of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the backdrop showcased a string of pictures of the Queen throughout her reign.

He was then joined by his fellow veterans who started to harmonise with the main act before poppy leaves fell from the big screen at the back of the stage.

Viewers couldn’t deal with the performance and took to Twitter in a flurry of tears.

‘Colin Thackery just makes me cry. What a lovely, lovely man. He makes me so proud,’ one wrote while another added: ‘Colin Thackeray brought tears to my eyes!’

Someone else said: ‘Colin Thackery on the #RoyalVariety not a dry eye in the house! #RoyalVarietyPerformance.’

However, others noted: ‘Well done Colin, can see he’s a proud man. Served his queen and country. Such a shame the queen wasn’t there this evening to fully full fill his wish.’

Colin is a Chelsea Pensioner and after winning the public vote during the 2019 semi-final of BGT he went on to win the show.

He moved both judges and audience with his cover of wartime classic We’ll Meet Again – which he had also dedicated to his late wife Joan.

Colin was born on 9 March 1930 and joined the Army when he was 15, saying on the BGT: ‘I was running a bit wild, so the Army was really my saviour.’

He served in the Army for 25 years, in the 45th regiment of the Royal Artillery, and is a veteran of the Korean war – while the Army was also where he met his beloved wife.

Colin confessed that he fell for her at the weekly camp dance.

The couple went on to have two children and four grandchildren – as well as singing together during their marriage, moving to Norwich after Colin’s retirement.
