Ant McPartlin has apologised for the delay on his new show with Declan Donnelly, DNA Journey.
Ant and Dec went on a journey to discover their family histories in a programme for ITV, which aired on Sunday night.
The show was first announced back in 2017, however it was delayed by two years as Ant was arrested for drink-driving in March 2018.
The presenters referenced the incident, and Ant’s stint in rehab that followed, at the beginning of the programme.
Sitting down with their friend’s uncle Alistair, who is a historian, they explained he wanted them to carry out a DNA test to find out where their families came from.
He suggested they make a TV show, after which Dec added: ‘It’s taken us a little while’ and looked pointedly at Ant.
Ant quipped: ‘Sorry about that’ and made a guilty expression.
Later on in the show, Ant brought it up again but saying he wasn’t surprised there were drunks in the family,
Dec learned that his great grandfather James Donnelly was a soldier who deserted the Crimean War after six weeks.
He was tried and imprisoned for ‘habitual drunkenness’ which would have ‘brought shame on the family’.
And he was discharged over his eyesight and which was ‘attributable to intemperance’ – having too much to drink.
Ant added: ‘I have to say, if there was gonna be a drunk in one of our families, I would have said it would have been mine. But then again…we are here to be surprised aren’t we?’
Dec said of the revelation about his grandfather: ‘Not what I was expected at all. I didn’t exact it would be such a colourful history.’
Ant and Dec’s DNA Journey continues Monday at 9pm on ITV.
